Reporting Vehicle Accidents

WHAT TO DO IN CASE OF A MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENT

Employees and other authorized drivers driving a University-owned or Fleet Services leased vehicle must report vehicle accidents within 24-48 hours.

1. In the event an accident involves injury or death of any person, or damage to any vehicle where it cannot be driven, immediately call 911.

2. No matter how minor the accident, stop immediately and investigate.

3. Prevent another accident by making sure a light or similar signaling device is placed to warn oncoming traffic.

4. Contact campus police if the accident occurred on or near campus.

5. Record the names, addresses, and telephone numbers of as many witnesses as you can. Also, write down the license plate number of any vehicles present at the time.

6. Take photographs.

7. All accidents or incidents involving University leased or owned vehicles must be reported by completing and emailing a University Vehicle Accident Report Form (note: this form should be in University Fleet Services Leased or University owned vehicle, if not please visit www.pts.pitt.edu/mobility/fleet-services/reporting-vehicle-accidents this form must be opened, filled out, and signed using Adobe Acrobat), include photos of both vehicles' damage and submitted by email to:

8. Except for the police, first responders, and insurance representatives, refrain from giving information concerning the accident to anyone. Provide identifying information to the other party involved, but do not assume responsibility.

9. In addition to this automobile accident reporting process, injuries sustained by University employees while on University business must be reported to Workpartners at 1 (800) 633-1197.

The use of personal vehicles is discouraged by University policy, and the driver’s personal insurance is primary.

 

Training

Employees with Automobile claims may be required to take additional Driver Safety training.

This session can be accessed through EduRisk’s Learning Portal.

At the site, scroll down to register and follow the appropriate prompts concerning obtaining a password.

Once you have successfully logged into the site, there are several trainings offered, which are listed in alphabetical order. Tab to the right to find the Driver Safety session.

This training course takes approximately 45 minutes to complete. It shares tips for proper preparation, good driving habits, and eliminating distractions. There is an examination at the end of the course, which requires at least 80% response accuracy to pass.
