Tips

Be prepared before you bike! Whether you're a pro cyclist or a first-time rider, we have compiled a series of helpful tips to ensure your next bike ride is both fun and safe.

Become Familiar with POGOH Bikes

Familiarize yourself with POGOH bikes and know how to evaluate a bike before you begin riding!

Adjust Seat Height

To adjust the height of a POGOH bike seat, release the clamp on the side of the seat post, raise or lower the seat to your preferred height, and re-tighten the clamp. Typically, a seat is at the right height when you can fully straighten your legs while pedaling.

Check Tires

Check your POGOH bike's tires by pushing each tire hard against a curb or the ground. If you can flatten it, it needs air. Turn each wheel slowly and look for cuts, bulges, or bubbles in the tire.

Test Brakes

Test your POGOH bike’s brakes by giving each wheel a spin to check that the brakes are responsive.

Inspect the chain, pedals, lights, and frame for any additional damage. Report damages through the PBSC app or by calling their customer service center at (412) 595-9421 or hello@pogoh.com.

Pennsylvania Bicycle Laws

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania maintains laws to ensure that cyclists can safely navigate streets alongside motor vehicles and pedestrians. We ask that everyone riding a bike on campus become familiar with these laws and abide by them at all times to ensure their safety and the safety of those around them. Review the Pennsylvania Bicycle Drivers Manual before putting the pedal to the metal!

Keep these rules in mind when biking around campus:

  • Do not ride on sidewalks.
  • Do not ride in dedicated bus lanes.
  • Always yield to pedestrians.
  • Stop at red lights and stop signs.
  • Do not wear headphones while biking.
  • Do not ride against traffic.

Although helmets are not required by law in Pennsylvania, we strongly encourage all riders to wear one while biking, especially those who are new to cycling in our city.

Plan Your Route

Plan your route before you pedal! Use the PBSC App to find the closest POGOH station to your starting point, stations along your route, and final destination.

View the Pittsburgh Bike Map to find the bike lanes, trails, and shared streets to get to your destination.

Pro tip: Google Maps, Apple Maps, Transit, and Citymapper are helpful apps to use when planning your next route. Google Maps will show you what hills you’ll tackle along your route, while Transit integrates POGOH stations into the route.
