Bike Parking & Storage

On-campus bike room.

Pitt has more than 1,508 bike parking spaces on campus, including indoor and outdoor racks, covered racks, secure bike lockers, and bike storage rooms in select residence halls.

Bike Racks

There are more than 450 outdoor bike racks (styles vary) installed across campus for short-term bike parking. Remember to lock your bike when using an outdoor rack.

Bike Lockers

Bike lockers are secure and weatherproof, completely enclosing your bike and gear to protect it from the weather. Bike lockers are an excellent option for all-weather commuters or those who need long-term all-weather storage.

Bike lockers are currently available in the Posvar Passage and Sutherland Hall, with more lockers coming to campus soon.

To rent a bike locker, you must first make sure your bike is registered through Pitt's BikeIndex. Once you finish registering your bike, complete the Bike Locker Application

Bike lockers cost $40 per term, plus a $10 refundable key deposit. Your key deposit will be refunded to you once you return your key at the end of your rental period.

Contact us via email at or (412) 624-4034 if you lose your bike locker key.

Bike Parking Tips

  • Always use a bike lock when parking your bike on campus.
  • Be sure to lock the front wheel and frame to the rack, not just your front wheel.
  • Lock your bike with a good quality U-lock rather than a cable. The majority of bike thefts are from bikes locked with cable locks.

Campus Bike Parking Regulations

The University of Pittsburgh enforces bike parking rules on its property at all times, including evenings, weekends, holidays, vacations, and breaks between terms.

  • Park your bike on a rack, in a locker, or bike storage room.
  • Except for designated bike parking facilities, such as bike rooms, bikes are not allowed in any University of Pittsburgh building, including residence halls, apartments, academic, or administrative buildings.
  • Do not park your bike on or against trees, handrails, pipes, or trash cans.

Improperly Parked Bikes

A bike rack is the safest place for you to park your bike on campus. Bikes secured by trees, handrails, or blocking the right of way on the sidewalks, steps, and ramps can be immediately removed by Pitt Police.

Bikes that show clear signs of abandonment (such as rusted chains, flat tires, and weather damage) and have not moved from a public rack for several weeks, will be removed and impounded by the Pitt Police.

If the University moves your bicycle, locks will be removed, and the bike will be impounded at your expense. If you believe your bike was impounded, lost, or stolen, please contact Pitt Police

Bikes that have been impounded and have not been claimed after 90 days are considered abandoned and become the property of the University.
